Aussie Michael Matthews in box seat for green jersey

AUSSIE Michael Matthews is now the favourite for the Tour de Frances points classification title after the dissolution of German sprint ace Marcel Kittel from the race.

Kittel crashed just roughly 20km into stage 17 and invective his shoulder. Matthews had edited Kittels green jersey guide to just nine points forward Kittel crashed and unaided the tour soon after.

TV footage showed Kittel monster treated by the race doctor, later blood dripping upon his right leg.

The German sprinter won five stages this year.

If Matthews can preserve his gain through to the famed last stage into Paris, he will become the third Australian to win the points classification.

Robbie McEwen won the green jersey in 2002, 2004 and 2006, as well as Baden Cooke took it out in 2003.
